VOLUME ONE: FUNDAMENTALS; THE BEGINNING AND END OF
MANTIS
This most important
film in the series is the beginning and end of southern mantis training.
Beginning with this video will ensure an excellent understanding and the ability
to reach a high level of skill. Without the understanding and practice in this
film, you will not reach your full potential. Taught are Principles of
centering, rooting, forward momentum, centerline offense and defense; opening
the horse stance; chop step, turn arounds; circle step; advance step; also
calisthentic work, song of the mantis body posture and kicking skills (3 step
kick; front kick; side kick; monkey kick; 4 corners kicking; and Lah Sao

VOLUME TWO: PHOENIX EYE FIST
ATTACKING / STEPPING
Fundamental training continues on
volume two teaching you to form the mantis fist and strike the basic straight
punch using various stepping patterns including Return Step, also forming the
phoenix eye fist, Jet Shu the straight punch, advance step striking, circle step
striking, chop step striking, alternating steps and striking, two man exercises
of straight punch. The training in this film teaches the critical aspect of
coordinating the upper and lower body movement in unison ensuring your attack

VOLUME THREE: CENTERLINE
DEFENSE
Continuing from volume two one learns the shuffle step and
half-stepping (forward, back, right, left), double punching, triple punching,
and the 3 uses / 5 practices principle; next one learns to attack and defend the
centerline in partner training using Mor Shu, the grinding hand single and
double bridge; Gwak Shu, the sweeping hand single and double bridge, Foun Shu,
the upper hooking hand single and double bridge; One step and three step
partners training is taught using inside and outside defense, and the three

VOLUME FOUR: ONE, THREE, NINE STEP
ATTACK AND DEFENSE
Continuing partner training from volume three one now
learns target practice to attack the chin and solar plexus as the mor shu, gwak
shu, and foun shu defensive hands are used to control the centerline. One step,
three step, and nine step partner training teaches single, double and triple
punching with defensive hands and fundamental stepping. Attacking (and defense)
is taught one step-one strike and one step-three strikes target
practice.

VOLUME FIVE: CENTERLINE STICKY HAND
TRAINING
Continuing from volume four, you now
put together the basic target practice of single, double and triple striking
with the basic centerline defense skills, mor shu, gwak shu, and choc shu to
train offensive and defensive “chi sao” or sticky hand. First, 4 count sticky
hand teaches the ability not to blink when being hit using mor, gwak and choc
(foun) shu; next, 2 count sticky hand mor, gwak, foun teaches to defend and
attack sticking with the opponent in movement using both inside and outside the
gate, and double bridge. This training culminates in the fundamental sticky hand

VOLUME SIX: SAME / OPPOSITE HAND
ATTACKS
Continuing from volume five, one next practices
loosening the 3 hands of the mantis arm with “second and third power circling;”
then the 10 elbow strokes are taught to shorten the in-fighting; next after
having trained in the previous volumes single defense and offense, one now
learns to defend and attack with the same hand in one motion, fixed and
stepping; followed by simultaneous centerline defense (mor, gwak, foun) and
attack with the opposite hand both static and stepping. Turning power and speed
of the basic centerline skills is then further refined by the 3 star hooking

VOLUME SEVEN: SAI, SIK, JIK SHU
HANDS
Following volume six you learn to further attack and defend the
centerline with more of the eighteen basic skills: Sai Shu, the roller arm
(jik-sai; sai-gao; sai-pai); Sik Shu, the eating hand (sik-pai); and Jik Shu
straight strike (the most efficient mantis hand; upper-lower; same side-opposite
side) . Also taught is the application of chop and circle step; walking the
horse akimbo, two man horse stepping; and opposite punch and kicking.

VOLUME EIGHT: GOW CHOY HAMMER FIST / INTERNAL
STRENGTH
Continuing from volume seven you now
learn the two man internal strengthening methods of four corners; reverse
push/pull; 2nd hand/power out; 2nd power in; 2nd power in/out; 3rd power ging
inside; 3rd power ging outside; 3rd power ging inside/outside; 4 corners high,
middle, low, and holding the center left and right. Four corner hammer fist (gow
choy) is now trained over, under, outside, inside and sticky elbow gow choy.
Hammer fist is one of the important tools of southern mantis. SPM08 $39.98 (60

VOLUME NINE: FOOTWORK IN SOUTHERN PRAYING
MANTIS
This informational film, in addition to displaying footage of
the Jook Lum Temple in Hong Kong has graphic illustrations of the principles of
southern mantis and documents more than twenty footwork patterns including:
opening the horse stance, shuffle step, turnarounds, chop step, circle step,
advance step, two man stepping, half steps, four corner steps, 180 degree
lateral spins, two steps forward, side to side stepping, whole body ging power,
short steps, diagonal stepping, sweeps, leg deflections, three steps forward,
monkey stepping and more. An overview of principles, stance, posture and
